What is the Suzuki method?
Shinichi Suzuki was a Japanese musician, philosopher and educator who believed that people are not born with talent, and that ability can be created and improved with time. Realizing that children learn to speak their native languages without much extrinsic aid, Suzuki began applying the principles of language acquisition to music learning, calling his method the mother-tongue approach. Foundations of the Suzuki method are loving encouragement from parents, constant repetition, group learning and positive reinforcement – all of which help create a sense of community and belonging among young musicians. Within the Suzuki method, parents must be involved in their child’s music learning every step of the way. Listening and engaging with music should be encouraged at birth, and while music training may begin at the age of three and four (similar to language learning), it is never too late to begin learning. In addition to private learning, children are encouraged to learn from each other and practice in groups. Respect is also nurtured through the Suzuki method, and young students are taught to thank their teachers and each other after each lesson, teaching them cooperation and camaraderie.
